2023 Honda Civic Review, Specs and Pricing

Honda Civic Highlights:

  • The Honda Civic offers impressive performance, fuel efficiency, spacious passenger area, and an elegant design, making it an excellent choice for a compact sedan.

  • While there haven't been significant changes to the Civic, the LX base trim has been removed from the lineup, and the Sport trim is now the entry-level option.

  • Despite the price increase, the Civic remains a highly satisfying small sedan that excels in all aspects.

  • The Civic Touring sedan, equipped with a turbocharged engine, delivers brisk acceleration, going from 0 to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds, above the average for its class.

  • The Civic handles turns with stability and sportiness, instilling confidence and providing an enjoyable driving experience.

  • The suspension effectively smooths out road bumps, although it sacrifices a bit of comfort for its sporty handling.

  • Supportive front seats and well-ventilated leather upholstery enhance comfort, but the absence of adjustable lumbar support may be a concern for those with lower back sensitivity.

  • The climate control system is improved compared to the previous generation, offering excellent vent coverage throughout the cabin.

  • While road noise can be noticeable, wind noise is relatively subdued, and the interior construction feels solid and vibration-free.

2023 Honda Civic Performance

Even though Honda completely redesigned every other aspect of the new Civic, they made the decision to carry over the powertrain options from the previous-generation car. Base models come standard with a 158-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while the upgraded engine continues to be a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that now produces 180 horsepower. The new Civic is offered solely as a front-wheel-drive car. Sadly, the manual transmission offered on the previous generation Civic sedan has been discontinued for 2022, leaving a CVT as the sole offering. A six-speed manual is still available as a Honda Civic hatchback model, though. At the test track, the turbocharged Touring sedan needed 7.5 seconds to reach 60 mph, which is slightly slower than the last generation Civic's result. The manual Sport Touring hatchback we tested did slightly better at 7.3 seconds to 60 mph. Luckily, the nimble handling, communicative steering, and well-balanced ride we appreciated so much in the last-generation model are present and accounted for here. Sporty Si and seriously sport high-performance Type-R variants are again part of the family and are reviewed separately.

2023 Honda Civic Technology

The Civic's touchscreen infotainment system is located high on the dash to help you keep your eyes on the road. It has intuitive on-screen menus and responds quickly to your inputs.

The graphics for the optional integrated navigation system look a little dated, but the map functions just fine. Our Touring trim had the larger 9-inch screen, while lower trims get a smaller 7-inch version. Most users will probably opt to use the standard Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone projection anyway. In the Touring trim, these systems can connect to your phone wirelessly. You can use a USB cable if you'd prefer, and we found it provided quicker connection speeds.

Honda's new camera-based advanced driving aids work well for the most part. We did experience some false alarms for frontal collision and the lane keeping assist got confused by faded lane markings, but these occurrences were infrequent. The adaptive cruise control sometimes brakes a little late, but it otherwise does an admirable job of reducing the burden of driving in stop-and-go traffic.

Which 2023 Civic is recommended?

The midlevel EX (sedan)/EX-L (hatchback) trim continues to offer the best value in the Civic lineup. It includes more standard features than the base Sport and a more powerful yet fuel-efficient engine for not much more money.

2023 Honda Civic Hatchback

The new Civic Type R leaves a lasting impression with its exceptional performance across the board. It proudly holds the title of the fastest front-wheel-drive car equipped with a manual transmission in our testing. Mastering the launch takes a bit of finesse, but once achieved, the Type R showcases its impressive acceleration and smooth powerband. The presence of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires enhances braking performance as they warm up, delivering confident and reliable stops.

However, it is in the handling department where Type R truly shines. Type R displays balanced and neutral characteristics, minimizing body roll and allowing for quick changes in direction. The steering, although slightly heavy, provides excellent feedback, ensuring a direct and engaging driving experience. With seemingly limitless traction, the Type R defies the limitations typically associated with front-wheel-drive vehicles.

Overall, the Civic Type R offers an exhilarating driving experience with its impressive acceleration, confident braking, and exceptional handling capabilities. It exemplifies Honda's dedication to delivering a high-performance front-wheel-drive car that leaves a lasting impression on the road.
