2023 Lucid Air Specs

2023 Lucid Air Performance

During testing by industry experts, the 933-hp Dream Edition demonstrated astonishing acceleration, reaching 0 to 60 mph in a mere 2.8 seconds, surpassing the speed of most vehicles we've tested. It also completed the quarter-mile in 10.3 seconds at an impressive 132.2 mph. The Grand Touring, while slightly slower, still achieved an astounding 0 to 60 mph time of 3.2 seconds.

One noticeable performance limitation is the Air's relatively narrow all-season tires. Though these tires contribute to the car's impressive 500-mile range on a single charge, they lack the necessary grip for optimal dynamic performance, especially given the car's substantial weight. For improved braking and handling capabilities, opting for the no-cost option of grippier summer tires is advisable.

Despite its limitations on the test track, the Air performs admirably and smoothly in urban settings. Different power levels are available depending on the selected drive mode, and even the base Smooth setting delivers ample power for street driving. One-pedal driving is another excellent feature offered by the Air, enabling acceleration and deceleration using only the accelerator pedal. Moreover, the amount of regenerative braking can be adjusted to suit individual preferences.

2023 Lucid Air Comfort

The Lucid Air boasts a pleasing interior, but at its luxury price point, we expected a bit more refinement. The seats offer extensive adjustment options and remain comfortable during long drives, but they lack overall support. While wind and road noise are minimal on the highway, some noticeable creaks from ill-fitting parts on the doors and steering wheel in our test car detracted from the experience. The ride quality is generally smooth, but it can feel a bit busy on bumpy roads.

In contrast to many manufacturers' full touchscreen climate control systems, Lucid has opted for dedicated buttons for temperature and fan speed. This design choice allows for easy adjustments without diverting attention from the road. Additionally, the ability to manually adjust the vents is a welcome feature, sparing users from navigating often complex touchscreen interfaces like those found in Tesla models. However, we observed that the Air's air conditioning struggles to keep the cabin cool on hot summer days, likely attributed to the car's all-glass roof, which, though visually appealing, allows a significant amount of solar heat to enter the interior.

2023 Lucid Air Interior

The interior of the Air is incredibly spacious, surpassing most other EVs on the road in terms of passenger space. Both rows offer ample headroom and elbow room, with particularly generous rear legroom, allowing passengers to stretch out comfortably. The wide-opening doors make entry and exit effortless.

However, taller drivers may find the driving position less than ideal. The seat doesn't lower sufficiently, resulting in tall drivers peering through the tint line at the top of the windshield. The visibility inside the cabin is a mixed bag. The large side windows and expansive glass roof flood the interior with natural light, but the thick front pillars and relatively wide-but-short rear window hinder outward visibility.

Furthermore, some controls leave room for improvement. For instance, the switches on the steering wheel feel cheap and clumsy to operate at times, detracting from the overall luxurious experience.

2023 Lucid Air Technology

Initially, our assessment of the 2022 Lucid Air's software and driver assist systems was predominantly negative. The infotainment system suffered from slow loading times, and we faced persistent Bluetooth connection errors. Furthermore, at the time, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not supported, and the collision alert system presented multiple issues that necessitated system restarts. The voice command system also lacked the full functionality offered by some rival vehicles.

Since then, however, Lucid has made significant progress by introducing numerous over-the-air updates, successfully addressing most of these problems. The touchscreens now boot up and respond swiftly, and Apple CarPlay integration is now available. The operation of advanced driving aids has been refined as well. Nonetheless, there is still ample room for improvement. Some of our editors have encountered bugs in the CarPlay integration, which only displays on the small upper touchscreen. Additionally, when using the lane centering system (Highway Assist), the Air's steering can be overly corrective, causing inconvenience when attempting small steering adjustments.

2023 Lucid Air Cargo Space

Lucid's engineers have clearly invested considerable effort in optimizing the available space within the Air's interior. The car offers a total cargo space of 26.1 cubic feet, divided between a 16.2-cubic-foot rear trunk and a generous 9.9-cubic-foot front trunk, or "frunk." Notably, the frunk's size surpasses those found in competing models like the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan.

While the Air may not be a hatchback like the Model S or Mercedes-Benz EQS, its trunk provides ample room. Though not particularly tall, it boasts impressive depth with an opening that spans the entire width of the car. Additionally, the load-in height is pleasantly low, eliminating the need to contend with liftover challenges, which is another positive aspect. Interior storage is equally impressive, thanks to sizable door pockets and a cleverly designed center console. Moreover, a hidden storage bin lies behind the power-retractable lower center screen, offering additional convenience.

The Air's wide-opening doors and spacious rear cabin facilitate easy installation and removal of car seats, surpassing rival vehicles in this regard. Even with taller front occupants, rear-facing child safety seats of any size should fit comfortably, with the anchors easily accessible.

2023 Lucid Air Range

  • Initially tested a 2022 Dream Edition Range with an EPA-estimated 520 miles of range (19-inch wheels).

  • Lucid Air achieved an impressive real-world range of 505 miles on our standardized EV range test, crossing the coveted 500-mile barrier.

  • More recently, tested a 2022 Air Grand Touring with an EPA-estimated 516 miles of range but only achieved 438 miles on a single charge.

  • Despite falling short of the EPA estimate, 438 miles is still an impressive range for a high-powered EV.

  • Lucid Air's high efficiency is notable, with our Grand Touring test car consuming 31.1 kWh of electricity per 100 miles, approximately 20% worse than its EPA estimate of 26 kWh/100 miles but still very efficient overall.
