In 2018, Norge Mining uncovered the massive deposit in southwestern Norway, subsequently revealing a staggering 77 billion tons of the mineral. This significant finding positions the company to provide essential raw materials for a minimum of 50 years, according to Michael Wurmser, Norge Mining's founder and deputy CEO, as reported by EURACTIV.

Phosphate rock serves as a crucial source of phosphorous, a vital component in fertilizer production, as highlighted by the OCP Group, a prominent phosphate rock mining company. Moreover, this rock can be processed to produce phosphoric acid, which finds application in diverse products ranging from animal feed to lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, powering solar energy systems and electric cars.

Prior to Norge's discovery, major phosphate producers included Morocco, China, the United States, and Russia, as outlined by a report from the Hague Center for Strategic Studies. However, the market faced significant disruptions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, leading to soaring fertilizer prices. The geopolitical influence of Russia and China over global food security further exacerbated the risks associated with the Ukraine conflict, as reported by Bloomberg.

Nevertheless, Wurmser believes that this recent discovery could help alleviate some of these risks, stating that finding such an enormous deposit in Europe holds substantial significance. He emphasized the importance of the phosphorous that can be extracted from these resources in providing autonomy to the Western world.

In addition to phosphate, Norge Mining also discovered extensive deposits of titanium, which is crucial for aircraft construction, and vanadium, a vital alloy used to strengthen steel. This multifaceted find further underscores the significance and potential of Norway's newfound resource wealth.
